Five universities have welcomed the Kings and Queens of Ft. Washington, Maryland to visit their institutions of higher learning. Every year Oxon Hill Middle School takes Kings & Queens to the University of Maryland at College Park, Bowie State University, Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University and the University of Maryland at Baltimore County.
This trip is meaningful to the students because they will visit the teams that they represent each day. In the Spring every student will declare a major with the support of the Adopt-A-School partnership with Prince George’s Community College.
An informal student survey noted that 60% of the students have never physically visited a college campus, that is, until the OHMS College Takeover. The movement came about as a first quarter reflection between Mr. Wendell Coleman, OHMS principal, and his AVID Coordinator and Academic Dean, Ashanti Bryant Foster.
Principal Coleman stated, “We should go and take over a university for the day – all 600 or so of us.”
Dean Fosteri stated, "or maybe the students should visit the schools, which their academic teams represent."
That night the plan was in effect and 13 charter busses later – the Takeover is on annually!
Oxon Hill Middle School’s mission is to reward excellence and develop college and career-ready students through PEACE, rigorous instruction, service, and nurturing relationships.
